Our Vyosha Spice Mix – the traditional Trikatu recipe

The VYOSHA SPICE MIX is based on the classic Trikatu recipe, a traditional Ayurvedic herbal blend of three hot spices: ginger, black pepper and long pepper. The name "Trikatu" comes from Sanskrit and literally means "three spiciness". This blend has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and is known for its diverse health benefits.

Background information on the three main ingredients:

Ginger:

  • Ginger is a widely used root and an important spice in Ayurvedic cuisine.
  • In Ayurvedic medicine, ginger is often used to improve digestion, relieve nausea and promote blood circulation.

Black pepper:

  • Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices in the world and is obtained from the dried berries of the pepper plant.
  • In Ayurvedic medicine, black pepper is called “Maricha” and is known for its warming and digestive properties.
  • It is often used to boost metabolism and increase the bioavailability of nutrients.

Long pepper:

  • Long pepper, also known as “Pippali,” is an elongated, cone-shaped fruit that is highly valued in Ayurvedic medicine.
  • It has similar uses to black pepper, but is often valued for its specific therapeutic properties, such as respiratory support.
  • Long pepper is often used to relieve respiratory problems, stimulate digestion and strengthen the immune system.

The advantages of Trikatu:

Trikatu is often taken as a dietary supplement or in powder form and may provide a variety of health benefits, including:

  • support of digestion
  • relief of cold symptoms
  • promoting blood circulation
  • strengthening the immune system

Please note: The use of Trikatu may vary depending on individual needs and health conditions. It is recommended to always consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or doctor before taking any Ayurvedic preparations.

Roasted Spices

When raw spices are roasted, several important changes take place that intensify the aroma and improve the flavor:

  • Release of essential oils: The heat releases the oils contained in the spices, which enhances and intensifies their aroma.
  • Change in flavor: Bitter notes are often reduced, while sweeter, smokier, or nuttier nuances become more pronounced.
  • Maillard reaction: Heat triggers chemical reactions between amino acids and sugars (the Maillard reaction), leading to browning and the development of more complex flavors.
  • Change in texture: The spices become drier and more brittle, making them easier to grind or crush in a mortar.
  • Loss of moisture: Spices lose moisture, which can temporarily improve their shelf life (if stored dry), but afterward they become more sensitive to humidity.
